OCD- a mass disorder

Entry 42

Synopsis: Based on a true story “ OCD-A Mass Disorder” puts light to an anxiety disorder- Obsessive Compulsive Disorder”. OCD touches life of each one of us in some form or the other, but it becomes worse if it remains unchecked leading to involuntary intrusive blasphemous thoughts and irritating compulsive behaviour and rituals.

The story revolves around life of Pawas, a typical OCD sufferer who was quiet normal earlier, but because of unawareness of his disorder his condition worsened. The objective of the movie is to put light to this noxious disorder which affects accountable portion (2%), so that people can identify and suppress it, as awareness is the cure for OCD.

There are a lot of rituals, symptoms and behaviours highlighted in the movie, which each one of us unknowingly perform throughout the day, that can sometimes lead to sever anxiety disorders and finally to OCD if not checked upon.

its a commendable attempt towards social awareness which has been silent over the years. OCD symptoms persist within every body but could be massive if ignored or not controlled.
I think, todays’ youth should come forward to put such cases infront of society, like Siddhartha did! which would bring a ” jagrukh bharat”

OCD does not allow you to live your life. The patient is well aware that his/her thoughts and visualizations are baseless, still he/she follows the set of actions to do away with the haunting thoughts. Compulsions (actions) gradually convert into rituals and life is infused with tyranny of helplessness. People outside India are sensitive about this disorder while in India we lack the basic awareness about it. All over the world the patients connect and help each other through Focus group and therapies which make their life less miserable. This documentary on OCD is an attempt to address the plight of the OCD patients in India. The lead character in the documentary is the real patient ‘Pawas’.Let us together acknowledge the cause and hand hold Pawas and many others who suffer by being a little more sensitive. A glimpse of the life of an OCD patient is also available at http://www.lifeisamiracle-shreya.blogspot.com.
Lets thank god for the gift of a beautiful and healthy mind, while we do this, we must help lead a normal life.

    OCD

    Soon, It all starts with little comments pop-up randomly Like: “you should do this or it ll happen”;

It’s juz negative inner voice. This is one’s self-conscious voice, but it’s loud.
As a victim myself,I hear this voice all the time. It speaks to me daily, when I walk down the street, through a shopping centre, at work, even speaks to me when I’m on my own. Always reminding me of the perceived absurdity of my manner and actions.
It really seems hopeless to try and change things.
Bcoz you are traped by your mind. You ain’t conscious enought to make changes. Bcoz you are compulsively doing things ordered by your mind. You can’t find a way out of your mind.I always want to jump out of my comfort condo, seeking a change. But I can’t Bcoz Pain is pleasure for me at that time. Being identified with my mind I couldn’t embrace change. Unknown is Bliss. You are really trapped in that comfortable zone.

“The little scratch on the roof of your mouth that would heal if only you could stop tonguing it, but you can’t.”

If OCD untreated at earlier stage, like if you avoid the symptoms like repetitive, random thoughts and compulsive behaviours, it leads to severe discomfort later on.

I Personally believe Introverts are mostly prone to this disorder. They over-analyze everything. You can’t stop thinking really. MInd makes too much noise, and it never subsides. It seems like a monster. You fight and obviously lose (unless there is no support.) Yep, I finally agree “Great Battle Lies Within”.

OCD probably associated with various mental illness. It gradually emerges one by one. Few mental illness that accompany with OCD are

    Hypochondria ( Fear of Diseases)
    Social Withdrawal Gradually
    Guilt and self-harm
Loss of pleasure in any activity
    Prolonged (Cllinical) Depression
    Bipolar Disorder
    Trichotillomania(Hair-pulling disorder)
    Eating Disorders
    ADHD(Attention Deficit)
    and finally
    Suicide.
(I myself Tried twice to get relief by commiting suicide, fortunately saved.)

Mastery over the mind is possible if given the right tools. Meditation is one of them and a very powerful one. Numerous studies have been conducted with Tibetan monks using brain scans. The benefits of meditation are tangible.
Many diseases are psychosomatic and by observing one own’s mind through a proper technique helps eradicate those diseases. Vipassana mediation is one of the techniques that has helped a lot of people to come out of their misery. You can learn more about it by consulting this website : http://www.dhamma.org

‘OCD – A Mass Disorder’ is a true story of a boy Pawas who represent more than 2% of the world population suffering from OCD –Obsessive Compulsive disorder. OCD has been there since ages and has affected lives of greats like Albert Einstein, Howard Hughes, Billy Bob, Michael Jackson, Jessica Alba, David Beckham to name a few.
Sufferers often try to keep their compulsive behaviors hidden from others, often to avoid embarrassment, humiliation or to avoid being seen as strikingly odd or different from others. If the condition is not realized by an undiagnosed sufferer, they may scold themselves in frustration as to why they are thinking or acting the way they are. Each one of us directly related to OCD and unknowingly perform rituals throughout the day, which if not checked upon can sometimes lead to OCD.
Typically a sufferer begins to acknowledge these intrusive thoughts, he then develops anxiety based on the dread that something bad has happened or will happen. The sufferer feels compelled to voluntarily perform irrational, time-consuming physical behaviors to diminish the anxiety.
Few major symptoms include repeatedly checking one’s parked car or door that has been locked before leaving it, turning lights on and off a set number of times before exiting a room, repeatedly washing hands at regular intervals throughout the day, touching objects a certain number of times before leaving a room, putting things in definite order before leaving or walking in a certain routine way etc
Through the movie, we would like to put light to this disorder to that people can Identify and fight in suppressing their compulsions as ‘Awareness is Cure’

You can watch the movie online ( its availabe in 3 parts )

    Part 1

    Part 2

    Part3

Please post the comments after watching the movie !!

    Cheers !!

When OCD affects over 2% of the population which accounts for almost 1 in every 50 people and the awareness level still being neglible, such initiative campaigns which Sidhart has taken is commendable.
The movie is actually a panoroma of an OCD affected patient and brings us closer to the ground realities and the sufferings that they have to unknowingly go through.
When “Awareness is the Cure” as pointed out..Kuddos to the entire team along with Sidhart for bringing us closer and giving an insight reagrding OCD!!

If I were to say that I have seen something that is more touching and in depth in content on OCD then I had probably be lying. Well the naked truth uncovered in the most unsophisticated manner. Graphically captures the plight of people suffering from it and how the environ around them mostly remains ignorant about it. A very commendable and creditable work, very easily could pass as a work of a seasoned pro. Many congratulations for the riveting job.
